Why do we go to church?

This is a question raised by one of my fellow sisters in Caltech small group.
"Do we go to church for the pastor's sermon, fellowship, or serving others? Then, if I can listen to sermons on line, I can get fellowships and servitude from campus small group, why do I really have to go to church on Sunday? Is it just a Christian tradition that we all have to follow?"
She's only 16 (yes, we have freshmen that are only 16 yr old...), but I don't know any better either. What do you guys think about this??

That is a very good question Christina.... Why do we go to church? Well for starters we shouldn't go to church for people that includes your friends and pastor(or any other leaders in church). The reason is your friends and pastor are still human just like us and it is inevitable for us to not sin. And sometimes and I hate to say it but most of the times people leave church because of those reasons. They see the person they trust sining and they get disappointed and they leave.(They should be praying for that person and that is where fellowship comes in)
So the main reason you should go to church for is for God and God alone because His perfect, He loves us and He doesn't disappoint us(MAIN point He died for us). So us, believer of Christ should OBEY(like pastor John said on his sermon)His words and that is 7th day is His sabbath. And you CAN NOT compare His word to a tradition, it is His word that we OBEY, not forcefully follow but OBEY, because we believe that He died for us and He loves us. And I guess in the end the answer is FAITH. Faith that if we OBEY and follow Him and His words, that He will guide us and lead us.

Hehe Sorry for all the grammer and Vocab errors....I just suck at writing... but hopefully it could help you explain it to your school friend, but you should definately talk to Pastor John for more info or correct info.

Well Christina I believe every church going Christian (speaking on behalf of Christians with a real relationships asking real honest questions) may come to a point in their walk with the Lord when they would ask themselves, "why do we need to go to church anyway"? Since Ki Young had a great answer to your question I'll just add in some scripture to back it up.

If we look into a simple fact, that Jesus was the one who started the church. In Matthew 16:18 Jesus says to Peter that "on this rock I will build MY church". Christ being the head of the church, us being obedient followers of Him, and by grace becoming one of His children, we are as the bible describes under holy matrimony in Ephesians 5:22-33. Jesus also tells us to keep watch over ourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which he bought with His own blood.

If that bit of scripture hasn't compelled you about the church then we'll just look at an early church example of people going to church. In a simplified sense, the people gathered together daily to worship, they were quite excited to read the word of God as they read it boldly and standing in reverence, they broke bread and partook of the wine everyday! I think hypothetically speaking (for our hearts) is that if we really desire the things of God we would not be thinking of how we could get out of doing God's work but rather seeking the Kingdom of God and His righteousness. Don't you think so?
